Hey Castaways!
Welcome to episode 8 of the Caribbean Castaways podcast! This episode is all about the island of Little Cayman in the Cayman Islands. It's one of the best dive spots in all the Caribbean, but there's a lot to do above the waves as well and that's what we are going to talk about today.
About Little Cayman
The Cayman Island are made up of 3 islands; Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. Little Cayman is by far the least populated with a permanent population of about 270 people. The population of iguanas that live on island is over 2,000.
Little Cayman is approximately 60 miles northeast of Grand Cayman and five miles west of Cayman Brac. It is about 10 miles (16 km) long with an average width of 1 mile.
Little Cayman is most well known as a diving hot spot. That’s why most people visit. It is one of the best dive locations in all the Caribbean and made famous by the Bloody Bay Wall and Jackson’s Bight dive locations.
While we are not yet dive certified, we were able to do a couple dives with the Pirate’s Point Resort team as part of their Discovery Dive program.
The best way to get there is to fly. People fly in from Grand Cayman via Cayman Airways. That’s what we did. Little puddle jumper, super small terminal.
We had the pleasure of visiting Little Cayman in 2018 (Exactly two years ago today, Feb 23. It must have been in our subconscious to do this podcast) via an invitation from Pirate’s Point Resort - An all-inclusive resort that caters to Divers but non-divers can feel right at home as well in one of their 11 cottage style rooms.
Our Top 5 Things to do Above The Waves1. Soak in the off-the-grid vibe. A true escape away from the hustle and bustle of more tourism heavy islands. We rode bikes into town, hit a couple little beach bars (true castaway style). We went to the Hungry Iguana, Beach Nuts at Little Cayman Beach Resort (lots of signs, lots of iguanas everywhere), and the Southern Cross Club.
2. Kayak out to Owen Island. We rented kayaks at Southern Cross Resort. Not super cheap, but worth it. We have a video of Own Island, we’ll put the link in the show notes. Keep in mind, Owen Island is privately owned so respect their land since they allow the public to explore it.
3. Bird Watching at Little Cayman's Booby Pond Nature Reserve. This reserve supports the largest red-footed booby population in the Caribbean. Our trip to the reserve was before I had my 600mm lens and now I’m dying to go back. Interesting though, you would see frigates hanging beside baby booby birds and this was really odd to us. Turns out frigates can’t catch their own fish so they steal it from the adult boobys. The scare them and make them drop (throw up) their daily catch. We actually witnessed this harassment when we were waiting at the Little Cayman airport for our flight home. The frigate scoops up the boobys lost meal in mid air. I feel bad for the boobys but it’s quit a sight to see.
4. Point of Sand - amazing beach, little pier, amazing water. Views of Cayman Brac. Sand has a hint of pink. Rented a car, two places to do so. Stumbled onto a little beach bar on the northside in Bloody Bay.
5. Explore by Bike - Since Little Cayman doesn’t have a huge population, even the most inexperienced biker (like Crystal) can enjoy sightseeing by bike. This gives you time to take in the natural beauty and see how many iguanas you can find during your journey.

ABOUT US
Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
Who Is RumShopRyan:Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal: I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!
