In this tutorial, we answer three (3) speaking questions recently seen by students in the IELTS exam.
Each answer has been transcribed and useful phrases that you can use have been highlighted.
The audio tutorial explains why these phrases are useful and how you can use them.
Tip: Listen to the audio, write down the phrases, and try to use them in your everyday conversations. Eventually they will stick and sound more natural.
1. Cue Card (Part 2)Describe a time you enjoyed.
You should say:
– where you were
– who was with you
– why you enjoyed it
– what you were doing
USEFUL PHRASES / DEVICES:
If my memory serves me well
I think it was around early 2000 we went down
funny memories
For example
gotten one over my uncle.
so much so
insanely
shivers
gotten one over someone – to beat someone (not physically), or take advantage of them…
So much so – this phrase indicates that your previous statement is true to a very great extent, and therefore it has the result mentioned.
I would like to talk about a time I went with my family to do some canoeing and cycling near Portsmouth, in the south of England. There were quite a lot of the family there at the time, my mum, my uncles, my grandma, my brother, my cousins, almost everyone. If my memory serves me well, I think it was around early 2000 we went down. I think enjoyed it because there were a lot of funny memories, we played a lot of pranks on each other. For example, I clearly remember pushing my uncle off his bike, I remember it because it was the first time I had ever gotten one over my uncle. I was cycling very close to him, so much so, he ended up without any space on the track, and eventually came off the track and slipped down the banking. It made everyone laugh so much, because he usually bullied everyone else. Anyway, before cycling we went canoeing but for me the water was insanely cold, I think it was because I had just flew in from Spain where it’s much warmer. Apart from the shivers I got, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day, especially the fish chips in the pub in the evening. And that’s my talk about an enjoyable day.
Part 3 idea: people spend their time.. etc . simple
2. Cue Card (Part 2)Describe any physical skill you learnt.
You should say:
– where you learnt it
– why you learnt it
– how long it took to learn
USEFUL PHRASES / DEVICES:
tough
was taking the mickey
a good two years
if my memory serves me well
fitness, technique
spared
was taking the micky
A good two years – we use this figure of speech to emphasize the time taken.
I would like to tell you about the time I learnt how to box. I learnt this skill in Spain, and it was something I had always wanted to do, I think when I was younger my parents wouldn’t let me. And throughout school I was a little embarrassed to do something the other teenagers were not doing. Anyway, I learnt from a really tough coach. This coach called me “peligro” which means danger in English. I think he was taking the mickey, because I was so bad when I started. It took me a good two years to learn it. I enjoyed every minute of it. The classes were hard, if my memory serves me well, we did a brutal 90 minutes every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with a mixture of fitness, technique and in the final 5 minutes we spared. However, I wouldn’t say I’ve learnt the skill because there is still a considerable amount left to learn. Eventually I’ll back into it though, I’m certain. And that’s my short presentation about a skill I learnt.
Brief anecdote to paint the picture: This coach called me “peligro” which means danger in English. I think he was taking the micky, because I was so bad when I started.
3. Cue Card (Part 2)
Describe about an advertisement that you saw.
You should say:
– describe the advertisement
– where you saw it
– why you remember it
USEFUL PHRASES / DEVICES:
campaign
outrage advertising
If I remember correctly
prints
global brands
although
As you can imagine
press
exposure
I’d like to talk about a very controversial advert I remember from when I was younger. It was an advert by the Benetton clothing company. I remember searching for this advert because I was impressed by the outrage the whole campaign had created. The news programmes reported it, the newspapers printed stories about it, it was outrage advertising at its most pervasive. If I remember correctly, I found the advert in a book about the world’s best adverts, there were prints from Absolut vodka, Hamlet cigars, and a few other global brands. Anyway, this advert featured a nun and a priest kissing, I think that was the image, although I cannot remember the exact scene right now. As you can imagine, this is a complete outrage in the Catholic religion, and so the Catholic church condemned the advert, which caused the press to report it, and ultimately giving more exposure to the company. So, that’s my talk about an advertisement I saw a long long time ago.
Another cue card seen by a student who did the exam recently: “My friend speaking yesterday her cue card was favourite song”
4. Cue Card (Part 2)
Describe about your favourite song.
You should say:
– what you like about the song
– who sings it
– how you found the song
